上世纪末，中国荒漠化土地每年仍在扩展。2004 年，全国荒漠化和沙化土地面积首次实现"双缩减"——这是历史性的拐点。At the end of the last century, China's desertified land was still expanding every year. In 2004, both desertified and sandy land shrank for the first time nationwide — a historic turning point.

草方格、沙障、封禁保护带。包兰铁路两侧的草方格固沙带，被称为"世界治沙奇迹"。Checkerboards, sand barriers, protected enclosures. The checkerboard belts along the Baotou–Lanzhou Railway are hailed as a "world miracle of sand control".
光伏治沙板下种草、沙漠旅游、梭梭嫁接肉苁蓉——让治沙也能产生经济价值，形成良性循环。Grass under solar panels, desert tourism, cistanche grafted onto haloxylon — making sand control economically rewarding in a virtuous cycle.
它们是第一批冲进沙漠的"绿色士兵"。They were the first "green soldiers" to charge into the desert.
"沙漠植被之王"。根系深达 10 米，耐旱耐盐碱，还能嫁接名贵药材肉苁蓉。"King of desert vegetation." Roots reach 10 m deep; drought- and salt-tolerant; hosts prized medicinal cistanche.
"平茬复壮"越砍越旺，是固沙造林的先锋，也是优质的生物质能源。Thrives on coppicing — the vanguard of sand-fixing forests and quality biomass energy.
耐旱、耐寒、耐贫瘠，花开时一片金黄，还是优质的饲料和蜜源植物。Drought-, cold- and barren-tolerant; blooms golden; fine forage and honey plant.
